Bram Bogart [1921-2012]

Bogart’s artistic search began in 1939. He left the Netherlands and stayed in the south of France for a while. From 1951 to 1959 he worked in Paris. In his work abstract characters emerge onto the ‘impasto’ coatings, a luxuriant pictorial mass with ingenious orchestrated tonalities. The matters become continuously more important and eventually dominate the composition. The colours become brighter and play with strong contrasts. This sort of painting consists merely out of matter, colour and character. From 1960 until 1963 he lived in Brussels as well as in Rome and Paris and eventually settled in Belgium. In 1969 he acquired the Belgian nationality.
