Luc Peire studied art in Bruges and Ghent and followed the footsteps of the Flemish expressionism and especially Constant Permeke. Peire was one of the founding members of the Jeune Peinture Belge. He exhibited at the Salons Apport (1943-1945). On the Balearic Islands (1950) he found himself in the fresco technique, which requires a quick and grand mastery. This brought him to the formal reducing and sober style which is called ‘abstract vertical’. His following trips (Spain, Morocco, Afrika, Belgian Congo) contributed to the stylistic evolution in his work. In 1959 he moved to Paris; the following year he became a founding member of the group Mesure. The vertical line becomes the key element of a system based on the repetition of a chromatic play which results in a rhythmic composition. The design of environments was the logic continuation of a spiritual approach.
